More Firms Unveil Checking Protection: Los Angeles-based Coast Savings became the first major California institution to offer buyer protection coverage on checking accounts. Under the coverage, purchases paid in full by check are protected automatically from loss, damage or theft at no charge, subject to certain restrictions. San Jose-based Pacific Western Bank also announced a plan, and Wells Fargo and Bank of America are believed to be considering similar offerings.
