SHORT TAKES : Beatles at Brandenburg Gate?
NEW YORK — John Lennon’s first wife Cynthia said Thursday that she hopes a long-awaited Beatles reunion will finally happen this year at East Berlin’s Brandenburg Gate.
The woman who spent 10 years with Lennon was in New York launching a grand global tribute that will culminate in Berlin on Oct. 9--the day Lennon would have turned 50.
She suggested the Beatles may play again in his honor.
“I’m very hopeful. The Beatles getting back together is not my priority--but it would be wonderful,†she told Reuters. “And until they do get together, they will be pestered. Life is short, and they’re all getting on a bit.â€
Event manager Perry Muckerheide said: “Paul McCartney’s management has indicated his support. And if this moment isn’t the moment to do it--when is? The call is for people to overcome their differences and bond together.â€
Muckerheide said McCartney, Ringo Starr and George Harrison had discussed a reunion and called the Berlin Wall a perfect setting. “John was very into symbolic acts and the grandest symbol of separation has now gone,†he said.
