X Singers May Perform Duet Sunday

Valley music fans may get treated to a rare duet by John Doe and Exene Cervenka this weekend.

The former husband-and-wife team have shared the stage several times since 1988, when members of their seminal Los Angeles band X wandered off in different directions (the group has not officially split).

Cervenka is scheduled to headline a benefit at, and for, BeBop Records in Reseda on Sunday. Doe is expected to be at her side, said BeBop owner Richard Bruland, though Doe has not confirmed that he will show up. He is listed simply as a “special guest†on the bill.

The couple burst into the music world in 1980 with X’s successful debut album “Los Angeles.†They continued to reign over the city’s punk scene until two years ago. Now divorced and remarried to other people, both are working on solo careers.

The BeBop show begins at 8 p.m. and will feature music and poetry. Cervenka will perform with Duke McVinnie and X guitarist Tony Gilkyson. Poets Michael Blake, Lauran Hoffman and Doug Knott will offer readings.

BeBop Records, a small shop where album bins are pushed out of the way to make room for folding chairs and a small audience, is at 18433 Sherman Way. An $8 donation is requested for admission. For information, call 818-881-1654.
