After World War II, the Van Nuys and Sherman Oaks chambers of commerce held a joint meeting and decided to dedicate a park to San Fernando Valley war veterans. Today, the Van Nuys-Sherman Oaks Recreation Center houses the most complete baseball and softball facilities in the San Fernando Valley.
A walkway circles several of the diamonds and serves as a jogging path for fitness buffs, and a stroller trail for parents in the neighborhood. Off the walkway, there are two play areas--one for toddlers and one for older children.
The center is increasing the number of classes it offers for children under age 6 who visit the park with their parents. Toddercise, a class designed to develop coordination in toddlers, has been popular with new parents and will likely be offered again in the spring.
