NBA ROUNDUP : Bulls Get Revenge vs. Knicks
The last time the Chicago Bulls were in New York, they felt they were robbed in front of a sellout crowd at Madison Square Garden.
On Jan. 15, the Bulls and Knicks were tied, 106-106, seemingly headed for overtime when the Knicks called timeout with 0.1 seconds left. Trent Tucker grabbed an inbounds pass, turned and made a 26-footer.
The Bulls protested that it was impossible to get off a shot in that time. The NBA tended to agree, but let stand the Knicks’ 109-106 victory.
The Bulls got a measure of revenge Tuesday night. Craig Hodges made a couple of clutch, legitimate three-pointers and Michael Jordan played his usual brilliant game to lead the Bulls to a 111-108 victory.
Jordan led the Bulls in scoring (34), rebounds (eight) and assists (seven) and they won for the 12th time in the last 14 games.
Patrick Ewing had 29 points for the Knicks, who still lead the Atlantic Division by 1 1/2 games. Gerald Wilkins had 26 points in the first three quarters, but missed all four shots in the last quarter.
Boston 112, Atlanta 100--Larry Bird’s shooting touch has returned and Kevin McHale has returned to the starting lineup, leading the Celtics to two wins in a row.
The excitement over moving to within 2 1/2 games of first place may be short-lived. McHale, who scored 26 points, had to leave late in the third period at Atlanta because of a knee injury. He may miss tonight’s game at Dallas.
Bird was nine for 14 for 22 points.
Phoenix 114, Utah 106--Kevin Johnson scored 14 of his 29 points in the fourth quarter and the surging Suns ended the Jazz’ 19-game home winning streak.
Cleveland 119, Philadelphia 102--Mark Price scored 30 points at Richfield, Ohio, and the Cavaliers kept their playoff hopes alive by handing the 76ers their third loss in a row.
San Antonio 103, Indiana 102--The Spurs, notoriously poor from the foul line, made just one field goal in the last six minutes at Indianapolis, but won by making eight free throws in a row.
The Pacers have lost six of their last seven to fall below .500 for the first time this season. The Spurs have won three in a row.
Portland 142, Orlando 117--The Trail Blazers returned home after winning four road games against the Atlantic Division and extended their winning streak to six.
Cliff Robinson had 22 points and Clyde Drexler 19 as the Trail Blazers cut the Lakers’ lead in the Pacific Division to 3 1/2 games.
Denver 117, Houston 114--Michael Adams had five of his 25 points in the last 74 seconds at Denver to help the Nuggets overcome another big game by Akeem Olajuwon, who had 25 points and 19 rebounds.
Sacramento 121, Miami 87--Wayman Tisdale had 21 points and Antoine Carr 20 at Sacramento to lead the Kings to their easiest victory of the season. The Heat has lost nine in a row on the road.
