WORLD : Salvador Rebels to Halt Attacks

SAN SALVADOR — Leftist Salvadoran rebels said today that they would suspend attacks on the civilian population in a bid to revive peace talks with the U.S-backed rightist government.
Sharif Handal, a commander of the Farabundo Marti National Liberation Front (FMLN), told Salvadoran radio that beginning midnight Friday, the rebels would suspend attacks on public transport, commercial and civilian associations that were not part of the armed forces.
President Alfredo Cristiani has called for the FMLN to cease attacks against civilians before talks to end the country’s 10-year-old civil war could begin.
There was no immediate government response to the rebel announcement.
