WORLD IN BRIEF : LEBANON : U.S. Denies Report of Talks on Hostages
The London-based Arab newspaper Al Hayat reported that U.S. officials have secretly discussed with Iranian representatives the release of Americans held hostage in Lebanon. But the White House quickly dismissed the report. “We are not aware of the source of these stories or any talks that fit this description,†Press Secretary Marlin Fitzwater said. The newspaper said that progress is being made in discussions among the United States, Iran and Syria aimed at gaining the release of 16 foreign hostages, including eight Americans, held in Lebanon.
