Associated Press

Fed up with months of overcrowding in the county jail, a sheriff on Friday commandeered a National Guard armory as a temporary prison.

Hampden County Sheriff Michael Ashe said that he took the action “to prevent the collapse of the criminal justice system. . . . “

State Secretary of Public Safety Charles V. Barry said Ashe had been notified it was illegal to put prisoners in the armory. He was ordered to have them removed.
