$18-Million Judgment in RICO Case: Aetna Life Insurance Co. said it and two other insurance carriers were awarded an $18-million default judgment in U.S. District Court in Los Angeles against David and Michael Smushkevich. The insurance firms sued the brothers under federal Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations statutes for allegedly running a fraudulent diagnostic laboratory that bilked insurers for more than $100 million in phony claims. The brothers, Russian emigres, fled the country after the suit was filed, Aetna said.
