Second-seeded John McEnroe battled Andrei Cherkasov and the officials Wednesday night before winning a first-round match at an indoor tournament at Milan, Italy.
McEnroe took 1 hour 52 minutes to defeat the 19-year-old Soviet, 6-1, 4-6, 6-4.
Ejected last month from the Australian Open, McEnroe was warned when he protested several calls in the second set.
Cherkasov broke McEnroe’s serve twice in succession and won three consecutive games to take the second set. McEnroe disagreed with line calls in the third set before winning the match.
In other matches, Jeremy Bates of Britain upset fourth-seeded Yannick Noah of France, 7-5, 6-4; top-seeded Ivan Lendl ousted Diego Nargiso of Italy, 6-3, 6-3; Italian Davis Cup hero Paolo Cane defeated Bruno Oresar of Yugoslavia, 7-6, 6-4; Pete Sampras downed Anders Jarryd of Sweden, 6-1, 6-3; No. 7 Horst Skoff of Austria breezed past Paolo Pambianco of Italy, 6-2, 6-2, and third-seeded Aaron Krickstein beat Omar Camporese of Italy, 6-4, 6-3.
Second-seeded Andre Agassi came from behind to beat Dan Goldie, 2-6, 6-0, 6-1, to move into the quarterfinals of a $250,000 tournament in San Francisco.
Agassi will face eighth-seeded Paul Annacone, who beat Tim Wilkison, 6-2, 6-2. Annacone served four straight aces against the 114th-ranked Wilkison.
