SIDELINES : McEnroe Appeals $6,500 in Fines at Australian Open

LONDON — John McEnroe has appealed fines totaling $6,500 imposed for offenses during last month’s Australian Open from which he was disqualified, the International Tennis Federation said today.
The 30-year-old American, thrown out for swearing at an official during his fourth round match against Sweden’s Mikael Pernfors, is in danger of missing one of the other three grand slam tournaments this year because of his behavior.
Any player fined a total of $7,500 at ITF events during a season is automatically barred from the next grand slam tournament.
The three-times Wimbledon champion defaulted from the Australian Open under new Assn. of Tournament Professionals rules after incurring three code violations.
He was fined $5,000 for verbal abuse, $500 for racket abuse and $1,000 for being disqualified.
