Nation : Drug War Nets Mayor’s Brother
NEW HAVEN, Conn. — The war against drugs declared by Mayor John Daniels when he took office five weeks ago hit home with the arrest of his younger brother on drug-dealing charges.
Robert Daniels, 48, surrendered to another brother, Police Detective Melvin Daniels, on a warrant charging him with selling cocaine and operating a drug factory in the city.
A spokesman for the mayor said the family had tried several times to get Robert Daniels to seek help for a drug habit but they did not know the extent of his involvement.
The mayor, who was told that a warrant had been issued for his brother, said he was “very saddened” by his brother’s arrest.
“I love him very much,” said the mayor, who launched a war on drugs when he was inaugurated Jan. 1 as the city’s first black mayor.
