In other nonconference baseball games:
Chapman 12, United States International 2--Tom Allison, Doug Yates and Mark Landeros each hit home runs and each Chapman starter had at least one hit in a game at San Diego called after eight innings because of darkness.
Yates’ second home run of the season in the third inning gave the Panthers (2-0) a 4-0 lead. Chris Cutliff and Landeros each had three RBIs. Jamie Cass (1-0) pitched seven innings, striking out five and allowing five hits and two walks.
Loyola Marymount 13, UC Irvine 6--Chris Gallego had three hits and scored two runs, and Brian Young hit a two-run home for visiting Irvine in its season opener. Irvine led, 6-2, going into the bottom of the third, but Loyola Marymount scored three runs and added seven more in the fourth.
In Big West Conference women’s basketball:
Cal State Long Beach 69, Cal State Fullerton 66--The visiting Titans led much of the game before losing to the 49ers, the eighth-ranked team in the nation. It was the closest Fullerton has come to defeating Long Beach since the Titans defeated the 49ers, 78-76, in the 1977-78 season.
Genia Miller scored 21 points in the first half and the Titans (10-10, 5-6) led, 35-31. Miller, who also had 11 rebounds and seven blocks, finished with 38 points, tying the school single-game record she set last year.
Long Beach (14-4, 7-1) went ahead for good, 60-58, with four minutes left when Penny Moore hit a jump shot.
In NAIA District III women’s basketball:
Cal Lutheran 80, Southern California Christian 79--Freshman point guard Amy Chandler made a 14-foot jump shot with one second left at Cal Lutheran. Brenda Lee had 27 points and 18 rebounds for Cal Lutheran. Kristen Bevis had 19 points for SCC.
In nonconference men’s basketball:
Fresno Pacific 91, Christ College Irvine 72--After trailing, 46-34, at the half, Christ College cut the lead to four with about 10 minutes remaining at Fresno. But Fresno’s Kye Steven made three of four three-point baskets to put the game out of reach.
Jamie McShan had 20 points for CCI (11-14, 3-3). Troy Brown scored 24 points for Fresno (4-2 in the conference).
In nonconference men’s basketball:
Southern California Christian 82, Cal Lutheran 81--After leading by 18 with 10:11 remaining, SCC was outscored, 31-14. With 21 seconds left to play, Jeff deLaveaga made a three-point shot to cut the lead to 82-81. But after a time out Cal Lutheran couldn’t foul SCC in the game’s final seconds. Mike Henjum had 25 points for SCC (15-7, 7-4). DeLaveaga scored 33 for Cal Lutheran (4-16, 2-3).
In nonconference women’s tennis:
Cal Poly Pomona 5, Cal State Fullerton 2--Caroline Sporer defeated Diana Ewing, 3-6, 6-3, 6-0, and Roseann Alza beat Julie Slattery, 6-3, 6-3, as host Fullerton (1-3) lost to Pomona (2-0), the fourth-ranked team in the Division II preseason poll.
