CAPISTRANO BEACH : Crash Kills Woman, Injures Another
A 37-year-old woman was killed Tuesday and a 79-year-old woman critically injured when their cars collided on Coast Highway in Capistrano Beach.
Sheriff’s Lt. Richard J. Olson said the crash occurred at 10:13 a.m. about a half mile south of Palisades Drive. Preliminary investigations revealed that the younger woman’s red Toyota station wagon, which was traveling north on Coast Highway, hit a concrete abutment and crossed into the southbound lanes, striking a Chevrolet Malibu head-on. The Toyota then careened into a guard rail, while the Chevrolet stopped across the northbound lane.
The Toyota driver, whose name was withheld until relatives could be notified, died at the scene. The other driver, Evelyn M. Caldwell, suffered multiple injuries and was in critical condition at Mission Hospital Regional Medical Center in Mission Viejo.
Sheriff’s deputies closed a section of the highway for almost an hour to investigate the crash.
