GOLF / PHOENIX OPEN : Four Shoot 65 to Share Lead in First Round
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — Bobby Wadkins shot a six-under-par 65 in the morning, and three other golfers matched that score later Thursday to share the first-round lead in the Phoenix Open.
Tom Purtzer, Lance Ten Broeck and Tommy Armour III also had 65s on the TPC of Scottsdale course.
Wadkins, in his 16th season on the PGA Tour and still seeking his first victory, had 11 threes on his card. One of them was on the par-5 third hole, on which he holed a 40-foot sand shot for an eagle.
Defending champion Mark Calcavecchia was one of six golfers at 67, along with Mark McCumber, Scott Hoch, Canadian Dave Barr, Ed Fiori and Sandy Lyle of Scotland.
The greens were treacherous, bumpy and spiked-up, and Brad Bryand and Andrew Magee found a way to negotiate them without putting.
Both players scored holes in one. Bryant’s ace came on the 157-yard 16th hole, Magee’s on the 150-yard fourth hole. Each used an eight-iron.
