GIRLS’ BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Savanna, Frederick Have Record-Setting Game
Junior guard Carrie Frederick set school records for points and assists and Savanna High School set a record for most points in a game as the Rebels defeated Anaheim, 90-29, in an Orange League girls’ basketball game Thursday at Anaheim.
Frederick had 35 points and 17 assists. She also had 20 rebounds. Frederick broke the scoring record of 31 set in 1983 by Becky Rediess. Frederick scored the first nine points of the game. Jackie Boxley added 22 and Stacey Aliff had 21 for Savanna, 13-7 overall and 4-2 in league play.
In other Orange League games:
Brea-Olinda 73, Magnolia 18--Sophomore Jody Anton scored 14 points and had 14 rebounds to lead visiting Brea-Olinda to its 43rd consecutive victory.
Tammy Blackburn had 10 points, five steals, eight rebounds and five assists for Brea-Olinda, which led at the half, 48-10. All 10 players for Brea-Olinda scored.
Valencia 60, Western 34--Sig Lo scored 15 and Hollie Keeton and Heather Kidd 11 each to lead visiting Valencia (10-9, 5-1). Judy Hlavac scored 10 for Valencia.
In the Angelus League:
Mater Dei 49, St. Joseph’s 47 (OT)--Melissa McDonald scored two free throws to give host Mater Dei (7-11, 4-2) the victory. St. Joseph’s, which was ranked fourth in 4-A, dropped to 5-1 in league play. Joan Maurer had 17 points, including a 12-foot jumper to send the game into overtime. McDonald had seven points and 11 rebounds. Beth Stieglebauer had 14 points and Jennifer Garcia had 18 of her 19 points in the second half for St. Joseph’s.
Bishop Amat 47, Rosary 33--Diane Wiskus had 13 points and nine rebounds and Wendy Herb had 10 points and 11 rebounds for visiting Rosary (10-6, 2-4).
In the Century League:
Foothill 58, Villa Park 34--Sandi Rasmussen scored 15 to lead visiting Foothill (11-8, 6-0). Heli Syrjanen scored 14 for Foothill.
El Modena 51, Santa Ana 46--Michelle Duckworth had 20 points and 12 rebounds to lead host El Modena (6-10, 2-4). Gracie Lopez had 27 points for Santa Ana.
In the Empire League:
Cypress 52, Katella 44--Frances Oda scored 25 points to lead Cypress. Katella led, 23-20, at the half and 31-30 after three quarters, but Cypress outscored the Knights, 22-13, in the final quarter.
Esperanza 39, Loara 38--Jennifer Harney scored from the baseline with three seconds to go for visiting Esperanza. Loara’s Kristin Thibodeau missed the front end of a one-on-one with no time left. Tracey Titus had 13 points and 13 rebounds and Jennifer Leonard had 11 points and nine rebounds for Loara (9-11, 2-4). Harney had 14 points, including two three-point shots, to lead all scorers. Esperanza is (16-3, 7-0) in league play.
In the Freeway League:
Fullerton 52, Sunny Hills 25--Jenny Comstock scored 14 for host Fullerton (13-5, 5-1). Lynn Gilbert scored 11 for Fullerton, which led at the half, 23-6.
In the Pacific Coast League:
Woodbridge 46, Costa Mesa 26--Deanna Harry scored 23 points and had 18 rebounds for visiting Woodbridge (16-4, 6-0).
In the Olympic League:
Whittier Christian 38, Capistrano Valley Christian 37--Debbie Hopkins’ 10-footer for host Capistrano Valley Christian bounced off the rim as time ran out. Cindy Williams had 15 points for Whittier Christian. Williams had eight in the fourth quarter when Whittier Christian overcame a 30-22 deficit. Hester Daniels had 11 points and 18 rebounds for Capistrano Valley Christian (6-10, 4-5).
Orange Lutheran 46, Brethren 17--Becky Pearson scored 12 to lead visiting Orange Lutheran (3-12, 2-6).
In the South Coast League:
San Clemente 63, Irvine 17--Wendy Moon had 13 points to lead San Clemente (13-8, 3-4). Irvine is 0-16, 0-7.
