Caltrans will close portions of Pacific Coast Highway from Topanga Canyon Boulevard (California Highway 27) to Chautauqua Boulevard near Santa Monica starting Friday to resurface a 3.8-mile stretch of the roadway. One lane in each direction along portions of the project will be closed for four weeks during weekday working hours.
Work on the southbound side will take place from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
On the northbound side, work will begin at 6:30 a.m. and end at 3:30 p.m.
The work is part of an effort to prepare the 44-year-old highway to handle an expected 83,000 vehicles each day by 1995.
Caltrans also plans to begin another roadway rehabilitation project in February on a 5.9-mile stretch of Topanga Canyon Boulevard from Greenleaf Canyon Road in Topanga to Cezanne Avenue in Woodland Hills.
