Shift $6-Million Grand Slam Cup, Profits to E. Berlin, McEnroe Asks

MELBOURNE, Australia — John McEnroe has a unique plan to help the people of East Germany, and at the same time boost the image of “greedy” tennis players.
McEnroe wants the controversial $6-million Grand Slam Cup switched from West Germany to East Berlin and most of the record prize money used to assist East Germans, adjusting to new-found freedom following sweeping reforms in the country.
“I don’t see the necessity of all that (prize) money,” he said today at the Australian Open. “It makes us seem even greedier.”
McEnroe said he would like to see the top players agree to skip the event, but admitted: “It’s not going to be easy for the top eight guys not to play.”
He suggested that switching the event to East Berlin would give it a special allure.
