BOYS’ BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Dana Hills Uses Defense to Gain Title

Dana Hills High School, led by a strong defense and guard Brett Blauvelt’s 17 points, defeated Antioch, 48-37, for the championship of the Canyon basketball tournament Saturday.

Forward B.J. Taylor, who had nine points and sparked the Dolphins’ defensive efforts, was named the tournament’s most valuable player. Jason Sbizuco added eight points for Dana Hills (11-3).

Dana Hills led Antioch, from Northern California, 16-5 at the end of the first quarter. The Dolphins then scored the first seven points of the second quarter to take a 23-5 lead.

Antioch (9-3) pulled to within 43-37 with a minute and a half left to play, but the Dolphins scored the game’s final five points.

Antioch was led by forwards Mark Butterfield and Matt Galvin, who each had nine points.

In other Canyon tournament games:

Cerritos 82, Newport Harbor 68--Kevin Williams had 20 points to lead Cerritos in the third-place game. Justin McIntee had 24 points and Paig Parish had 16 for Newport Harbor, the defending tournament champion.

Bakersfield 77, Esperanza 53--The Aztecs fell behind, 24-10, in the first quarter and never recovered in the fifth-place game. Joe Foss had 20 points and Walter Forcatto 12 for Esperanza. Bakersfield was led by Mark Minnieweather’s 16 points.

South (Bakersfield) 70, Valencia 44--The Tigers were never competitive in the seventh-place game and trailed, 60-26, after three quarters. Clayton Madden had 31 points for South, and Brian Manning led Valencia with nine.

Pomona 62, Canyon 60--Kevin Wilborn scored 19 points and Abdi Barkhordar’s 17 for Canyon (6-7) in the consolation championship. Johnny McWilliams had 26 points for Pomona.

In the Chino tournament:

Savanna 60, University 49--Savanna made 10 of 12 free throws in the fourth quarter to pull away in the fifth-place game. Savanna (9-5) was led by Keith Rodriguez, who had 18 points and 15 rebounds, and Ben Smith, who added 17 points.
