Malaysia Says It Will Return ‘Boat People’

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia — The government will repatriate Vietnamese “boat people” who do not qualify for refugee status, and Malaysian officials will begin talks with Vietnam on the issue next month, Foreign Minister Abu Hassan Omar said.
Malaysia is the first country to announce plans to send back Vietnamese after a group of refugees were forcibly repatriated last week from Hong Kong amid an international outcry.
