Nevada Las Vegas Down to 6 Candidates for Football Job
LAS VEGAS — Nevada Las Vegas, which hopes to name its new football coach by the end of the week, had its field of candidates drop from seven to six Monday.
Artie Gigantino, special teams coach for the Rams, was interviewed Monday by the 17-member committee. Jim Strong, offensive coordinator at Notre Dame, is scheduled to be interviewed today with Cal State Fullerton Coach Gene Murphy set for Wednesday.
Portland State Coach Pokey Allen withdrew his name because he believed there weren’t enough players on scholarship to rebuild the team quickly enough, Athletic Director Brad Rothermel said. The other three candidates are John Jenkins, offensive coordinator at the University of Houston, Fresno State recruiting coordinator Pat Hill and Gary Darnell, interim head coach at Florida.
