Celebrating Calcutta
Perhaps due to the attention given Mother Teresa’s care of the poor, Calcutta has gotten a bum rap and is avoided by many travelers to India.
But the world’s fourth-largest metropolitan area provides a interesting opportunity to dig into the history of the British in India. Then there is the beautiful Victoria Memorial, which includes a huge museum. The Memorial overlooks a large mid-city park where one may watch Bengalis playing cricket or soccer, walking or horseback riding. The Calcutta zoo has a fine collection of exotic animals.
The people of the city are friendly and helpful. Many speak English. We enjoyed it.
