WORLD IN BRIEF : TAIWAN : Nationalists Agree to Recount Votes

The Nationalist government in Taiwan agreed to recount an important race after the ruling party’s victory drew allegations of fraud and led to a clash between police and thousands of opposition protesters in Tainan. In Taipei, the capital, newspaper reports said about 12% of the votes cast in Saturday’s election were bogus. Central Election Commission officials refused to comment on the reports. The vote, the first multi-party election in Taiwan’s history, dealt the Nationalist Party its worst setback in 40 years.
