A 63-year-old man was critically injured today when the pickup he was driving crashed and burst into flames on the Golden State Freeway in Sun Valley, snarling traffic for more than an hour, authorities said.
The accident occurred about 6 a.m. on the southbound lanes of the freeway near Sunland Boulevard, California Highway Patrol Officer Joe Johnson said. The motorist apparently lost control of the vehicle and crashed into the center divider, Johnson said.
The injured man was taken to St. Joseph Medical Center in Burbank, where he was listed in critical condition with burns, a hospital spokeswoman said. His name was withheld until relatives could be notified.
