NATION IN BRIEF : ALASKA : Organisms Devour Oil From Exxon Spill

Tiny organisms have been eating the remaining oil from the Exxon Valdez spill at breakneck speed, thanks to artificial fertilization, the Environmental Protection Agency reported. But EPA scientists in Anchorage cautioned that the process, called bioremediation, appears to work well on oil lingering on beaches already cleaned by Exxon Corp., but not on thick globs of crude on untreated shores. Bioremediation involves fertilizing beaches to stimulate the growth of microorganisms that devour oil.
