CS Long Beach Meets Stephen F. Austin
The Cal State Long Beach basketball team, with nine new players, opens the season tonight at 7:30 against Stephen F. Austin of Nacogdoches, Tex., in the university gym.
The 49ers, 13-15 overall and 10-8 in the Big West Conference last season, are starting their third season under Coach Joe Harrington, who believes he finally has the athletes and depth he has always wanted.
Among the newcomers are 6-8 junior forward Kevin Cutler, a former All-American at Arizona Western College; 6-8 forward Frankie Edwards, a sophomore from Long Beach Millikan High School; 6-5 guard Lucious Harris, a freshman from Reseda Cleveland High, and Troy Joseph, a 6-4 junior forward from Fullerton College.
They will start with returning guard Tyrone Mitchell, who averaged 11 points, five rebounds and five assists a game last season.
Stephen F. Austin, a Division I-AA team that competes in the Southland Conference, was 10-18 last season.
