Clarence (Gus) Newman; L.A. Press Club Founder
Clarence (Gus) Newman, 82, who with seven other journalists in 1947 formed the Greater Los Angeles Press Club. The first meetings were at the old Case Hotel across from the Los Angeles Examiner building where Newman over the years was a reporter, real estate writer, automotive editor, outdoor editor and assistant city editor. After the Examiner and the Herald Express merged into the Herald Examiner in 1962, he went into the public relations field where he worked on the campaign that brought the London Bridge to Lake Havasu, Ariz. On Friday in North Hollywood after a heart attack.
