Dean Alfange; Helped Found Liberal Party

Dean Alfange, 91, who was instrumental in forming the Liberal Party, a once potent force in New York’s city and state politics. Alfange was a lawyer who also ran for governor of New York on the American Labor Party ticket in 1942, finishing third. In 1941, he had run unsuccessfully as a Democrat for a congressional seat. After leading the American Labor Party for several years, he broke ranks with it over pro- and anti-Communist factions and helped form the Liberal Party in 1944. Born in Istanbul, Turkey, to Greek parents, Alfange was brought to the United States as an infant and was raised in Upstate New York. On Oct. 24 in New York City.
