From Times Staff and Wire Reports

More than 500 workers from around the state arrived in Charlotte, N. C., to begin the first citywide cleanup since the remnants of Hurricane Hugo struck more than a month ago. Officials said that the workers were prepared to stay on the job seven days a week for at least five weeks to clean up the tons of debris left by Hugo. The hurricane was downgraded to a tropical storm by the time it hit Charlotte, but it uprooted thousands of trees, knocked down power lines and flooded low-lying areas. Three people died in the Charlotte area, and estimates put the damage at $300 million.
