CALIFORNIA IN BRIEF : FRESNO COUNTY : Lettuce Workers Strike Over Wages

About 3,000 lettuce workers have gone on strike after rejecting a three-year contract providing an 8-cent hourly wage hike from grower Bud Antle Inc. The workers walked off fields in Huron, Salinas and Santa Maria on Thursday, 10 days into the fall harvest at the Huron site. The lettuce will blossom and turn to seed if it is not harvested in four or five days, according to the Fresno County Agriculture Department.
