Free Flu Shots Offered to Residents Over 55
The Los Angeles County Department of Health Services is offering free flu shots to county residents 55 and older through Dec. 15.
The shots will be offered through local senior citizens centers and county health centers and clinics.
Dr. Stephen H. Waterman, the county’s chief of Acute Communicable Disease Control, recommended the shots to senior citizens and younger people who have heart and lung conditions.
Waterman said that people who receive the shots could still contract the flu, but symptoms would be milder.
The health department also recommends that people over 65 receive pneumococcal immunizations, of which only one is needed in a lifetime. Senior citizens are advised to check with the health department to find the location of the nearest clinic offering those immunizations.
