P.M. BRIEFING : Sales Off, GE to Cut 1,100 Jobs

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — General Electric Co. said today it will eliminate the jobs of 1,100 salaried employees in its major appliance group in seven states due to weakening sales.
The company said it hoped to cut most of the affected jobs by offering early retirement and transfers, but a spokesman said some layoffs may be required.
Affected are salaried workers at the company’s major appliance manufacturing plant in Louisville as well as facilities in Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin, Maryland, Tennessee and Georgia, the company said.
The latest job cuts mark the fourth major round this year in GE’s appliance group, which has cited changing markets, increased foreign competition and sluggish sales trends.
