From Times Staff and Wire Reports
Volunteers with metal detectors scouring fields near Alta found a portion of the hydraulic system of United Airlines Flight 232, the jet that crashed in Sioux City July 19, killing 112 people. The part was taken to the Sioux City airport with hydraulic fluid still dripping from it, officials said. Investigators have said the DC-10’s hydraulic systems were ruptured by pieces from the plane’s No. 2 engine, which disintegrated in flight.
