NATION IN BRIEF : MICHIGAN : Insurance Bill Paid for AIDS Patients

Michigan has begun paying private insurance premiums for some AIDS patients. Nine men with acquired immune deficiency syndrome have been approved for the program, which provides insurance to AIDS patients who stopped working because they became too ill. Federal regulations allow people who lose their jobs to keep insurance for 18 months at their own expense, but many can’t afford it. The state can save $1,000 per month per patient by paying that premium rather than billing treatment to Medicaid.
