ON THE SIDELINES : Graf in Zurich Quarterfinals
ZURICH, Switzerland — Top-seeded Steffi Graf easily moved into the quarterfinals of the European Indoors tennis tournament today with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over South Africa’s Dinky van Rensburg.
The West German, ranked No. 1 in the world, needed only 46 minutes to oust her 92nd-ranked unseeded opponent in a second-round match.
Late Tuesday, Helena Sukova of Czechoslovakia, the tournament’s No. 3 seed, reached the second round with a 7-5, 6-3 victory over West Germany’s Claudia Kohde-Kilsch and sixth-seeded Hana Mandlikova of Australia defeated Radka Zrubakova of Czechoslovakia 4-6, 7-5, 6-1.
In Tokyo, top-seeded Stefan Edberg of Sweden defeated Canadian Glenn Michibata 6-1, 6-3 today in the first round of the Seiko Super Tennis Tournament. Edberg, ranked third in the world, broke service twice in the first set and three times in the second, ending the 62-minute match with a drop shot.
