Capitals Beat Canadiens, End Roy’s Streak

MONTREAL — Dale Hunter scored his second goal of the game 3:37 into overtime Monday night to give the Washington Capitals a 4-3 comeback victory over the Montreal Canadiens, ending goalie Patrick Roy’s 35-game regular-season home unbeaten streak.

Hunter, who also scored in the first period, faked Roy, then wristed a shot over Roy’s right shoulder for the game-winner. The Canadiens lost in overtime for the second consecutive game.

Washington’s Michal Pivonka scored with 2:08 remaining in regulation to force the overtime. Pivonka got his third goal of the season with a back-handed swing at the rebound of Dino Ciccarelli’s shot.

Brian Tutt, a 27-year-old rookie, also scored for Washington, his first National Hockey League goal. Stephan Lebeau, Tom Chorske and Jocelyn Lemieux, with his first NHL goal in two years, scored for Montreal.

Lebeau opened the scoring at 4:28 of the first period with Washington’s Chris Felix off for holding. He back-handed the rebound of Stephane Richer’s shot behind goalie Don Beaupre.

Hunter tied it at 17:22 when he tipped in a shot by Geoff Courtnall, but Lemieux scored 15 seconds later.
