PORTLAND, Ore. — The FBI announced Monday that at least 41 people in four Western states were arrested or detained as part of a series of raids aimed at breaking up a Mexico-based tar heroin and cocaine smuggling ring.
Danny O. Coulson, special agent in charge of the FBI office in Portland, said 21 people were arrested on drug charges and 20 others were detained by the Immigration and Naturalization Service in a crackdown with the code name “Tarport.”
Coulson said the raids, involving 300 officers from 26 agencies, capped an 18-month investigation into a “major Mexican drug trafficking organization” operating from the state of Sinaloa in Mexico.
