Philanthropist, Actor Get President’s Hunger Award
Los Angeles philanthropist Mickey Weiss and actor Ted Danson were among 13 people honored Monday as “America’s outstanding hunger fighters†during a White House ceremony.
The recipients were greeted by President Bush and presented with the Presidential End Hunger Award in categories ranging from research and education in the development and provision of food supplies to focusing public attention on hunger.
Weiss established a charity in 1987 that recovers unsalable but edible fruits and vegetables from the Los Angeles produce market’s wholesalers and supplies outlets for feeding the needy and homeless. He was recognized for the second straight year with a presidential award. Last November, former President Ronald Reagan presented Weiss with the Private Sector Initiative Commendation for his efforts to feed the hungry.
Danson, star of the television series “Cheers,†was cited for his support of efforts to protect children’s health, especially in Third World countries, and for his campaign to persuade the television networks to feature prime-time shows during the same week in December that deal with hunger, homelessness and poverty.
