Olympic gold medalist Karch Kiraly and partner Brent Frohoff prevented Mike Dodd and Tim Hovland from winning beach volleyball’s triple crown by beating them, 11-5, in the final of a $100,000 tournament at San Diego.
Dodd and Hovland, both from Manhattan Beach, had won the top prize in the first two tournaments--in Clearwater, Fla., and Boulder, Colo. Each victory earned them $50,000.
A crowd of nearly 20,000 watched Dodd and Hovland take a 4-2 lead in the championship match. But Kiraly--who won gold medals with the U.S. team at the 1984 and 1988 Olympics--and Frohoff scored the next seven points before Dodd and Hovland got their fifth and final point.
