College Roundup : Northridge Heats Up in 4-0 Soccer Victory

After being limited to one goal on Wednesday, Cal State Northridge broke out with a flurry Friday against Southern California College in a 4-0 nonconference soccer victory.

Scott Piri scored twice and goalkeeper Mike Littman recorded his first shutout of the season as the Matadors improved to 3-0-1.

Piri, a sophomore from Ridgecrest Burroughs High, scored the second and fourth goals for Northridge, the fourth-ranked team in this week’s NCAA Division II poll.

Piri’s first goal came at the 28-minute mark on assists from Bobby Guerrero and Andy Torres, and his second came on a penalty kick with 35 minutes remaining.

“Our combination play was much better today than on Wednesday,†CSUN Coach Marwan Ass’ad said. “We still need to work on our consistency throughout the match.â€

Terry Davila, a sophomore from Reseda High, gave Northridge a 1-0 lead at the 20-minute mark and Jim Hofferber headed in the Matadors’ third goal on a corner kick from Keith Martin 15 minutes later.

John Alevras and Martin assisted on Davila’s score.

In other matches:

Grand Canyon 2, The Master’s 1--Junior forward Randy Whitfield scored early in the second half to break a scoreless tie, but Master’s could not maintain the lead in a Fresno Pacific tournament game in Fresno.

The winning goal was scored with 10 minutes remaining. Master’s (2-2-1) will play its final game of the tournament today against Evergreen State College, the seventh-ranked team in the NAIA.

“After the (previous) match, which lasted two hours and 40 minutes, our guys just didn’t have their legs today,†Master’s Coach Mark Schubert said. “We played well but could not finish off our scoring opportunities.â€

Moorpark 4, Mt. San Antonio 0--Sergio Pizano, Richy Rungaitisi, Chuck Forwood and Jeff Spach each scored a goal as Moorpark’s first-year team won its first match.

Goalkeepers Dan Madsen and John Trudeau combined on the shutout for host Moorpark (1-1).

WATER POLO

Valley 12, Mt. SAC 11--Dave Scott scored three goals for the Monarchs in a second-round match in the Mt. SAC tournament.

Earlier, Tony Pino scored four goals to lead Valley to an 11-8 victory over San Bernardino.

Goalie Kurt Gilensen recorded 11 saves in the two games.
