Brito Leads Western Past Cypress
Quarterback Gilbert Brito passed for one touchdown and added a 30-yard field goal to help Western High School to a 31-19 victory over Cypress in a nonleague football game Thursday in front of about 1,000 at Western.
With Western trailing, 7-0, Brito passed 36 yards for a touchdown to running back Barry Howell on fourth and 12 with six minutes left in the first half. Brito’s extra point tied the score, 7-7.
Brito kicked the 30-yard field goal with eight seconds left in the first half to give Western (1-1) a 10-7 lead.
Western added short touchdown runs by Corey Manliguis and Dariel Whipple in the third quarter to take a 24-7 lead with 1:05 left.
Cypress (1-1) made it close when quarterback Bobby Hubbard threw a pair of fourth-quarter passes for touchdowns to tight end Sean Gibson. They also teamed for a four-yard touchdown pass in the first half.
