A National Collegiate Athletics Assn. investigation into the University of Nevada Las Vegas basketball program has expanded beyond the recruitment of Lloyd Daniels, according to a UNLV official.
UNLV Athletic Director Brad Rothermel said the NCAA has been asking questions about areas such as use of athletic department phones, transportation to and from campus, and a report that an athlete received a pair of basketball shoes during a recruiting visit.
The NCAA has been looking into the recruitment of Daniels, the New York prep star who was dropped by UNLV after he was arrested on drug charges. Daniels never played for UNLV.
Former Kentucky basketball center LeRon Ellis said he decided to attend Syracuse rather than UNLV after being told by NCAA investigators that UNLV was being investigated. Ellis transferred from Kentucky after that program was placed on three years’ probation for NCAA violations.
