THE SIDELINES : Conner Designer Joins Isler Team
SAN DIEGO — Designer Bruce Nelson joined Peter Isler’s America’s Cup team after serving in two successful campaigns with Dennis Conner, Isler’s syndicate announced.
Nelson was a member of Conner’s design team in the 1987 12-meter regatta and helped build the controversial catamaran that bested New Zealand in the 1988 event.
Isler, a member of Conner’s crew in the 1987 and 1988 races, will represent the Waikiki Yacht Club of Honolulu as a challenger in the 1992 regatta if New Zealand wins the court fight over the legality of the catamaran. He will sail as a defense candidate if the San Diego Yacht Club wins.
Although Conner has announced plans to enter the 1992 Cup, Nelson said he joined the Hawaiian team because Conner was not moving forward.
