Nehemiah Defeats Kingdom in 110-Meter Hurdles in Spain

Renaldo Nehemiah defeated two-time Olympic champion Roger Kingdom Wednesday, almost a month after Kingdom set the world record in the 110-meter hurdles.

Nehemiah, who had held the world record before Kingdom ran 12.92, won in 13.30 seconds Wednesday. Kingdom, who set his mark Aug. 16 at Zurich, Switzerland, was timed in 13.48. Cuba’s Emilio Valle was third in 13.54.

Other winners included Abdi Bile of Somalia in the 1,000, Brahim Boutain of Morocco in the 3,000 and American Danny Harris in the 400 hurdles.

Sandra Gasser of Switzerland returned to competition after a two-year suspension after testing positive at the 1987 World Championships with an easy victory in the women’s 1,000 in 2:31.51.
