Santa Clarita Bans Untreated Wood Roofs
The Santa Clarita City Council has banned the use of wood shingles and roofs that have not been treated with fire-retardant chemicals.
The council unanimously approved an ordinance Tuesday night that outlaws any other roofing material that cannot pass fire safety tests. The measure was developed with the Los Angeles County Fire Department and applies only to new construction.
The council declined to ban wood roofs entirely, saying fire-retardant roofs provide sufficient fire protection.
The city of Los Angeles banned wood shingles of all kinds in new construction in the city under an ordinance signed by Mayor Tom Bradley on July 22.
