WORLD : 55 Die in Air Crash Off Denmark

COPENHAGEN, Denmark — A chartered passenger plane crashed in the Skagerrak Strait north of Denmark’s Jutland Peninsula today, killing all 55 people aboard, rescue officials said.
“We have found 19 dead, and there are no survivors. . . . The plane disintegrated. We just found the main wheel floating and the nose cone,” said Kurt Rasmussen, an official at the Danish Sea Rescue Center. There was no indication that any of the wreckage came down on land, officials said, and the cause of the crash could not be immediately determined. The question of sabotage was not raised.
The chartered twin-engine Convair turboprop plane, belonging to the Norwegian airline Partnair, was flying from Oslo, Norway, to Hamburg, West Germany, a popular weekend destination for Norwegians on holiday.
