Laguna Beach : Council to Consider Giving Funds to Shelter

The City Council on Tuesday will consider giving $100,000 to the Friendship Shelter, a center for the homeless that opened in November.

The city Human Affairs Committee voted unanimously last week to approve allocating a portion of a city fund created to assist low-income residents, City Manager Kenneth C. Frank said.

During hearings on the 1989-90 budget, the City Council set aside $646,000 for that fund.

Shelter operators would use the $100,000 to pay off a portion of a $220,000 loan on the property, on South Coast Highway, said City Clerk Verna L. Rollinger, also a member of the shelter board of trustees.

The shelter houses about 20 homeless people on a temporary basis. They are referred there by the Police Department and by local churches and social service agencies.
