The City Council has approved a one-year contract that gives South Gate police officers an 8.7% increase in salaries and benefits.

The agreement calls for the city’s 81 police officers, who engaged in a two-day sickout earlier this month over a contract dispute, to receive salary increases in three installments. The first 3% is retroactive to Aug. 2. The second 3% is due Dec. 31 and the last 2% will take effect April 1. The remaining .7% represents health insurance and pension benefits which are spread over the entire contract period. The total additional cost to the city will be $402,738.

The council ratified the agreement at its regular meeting Monday. The city had been negotiating with the South Gate Police Officers’ Assn. since April. The old two-year contract expired June 30.
