Jockey Cordero Gets Fine, Suspension
SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. — Jockey Angel Cordero Jr. was fined $1,000 Sunday for a display of temper toward an official after a race Saturday.
Cordero was disqualified from first place when his mount, Foresta, was deemed to have interfered with Sultry Secret during the stretch run. He was suspended by the stewards for 10 days, Aug. 31 through Sept. 9.
Cordero appealed the decision and was granted a stay pending a hearing before the New York State Racing and Wagering Board.
Although films appeared to leave no doubt that Foresta did, bear in on Sultry Secret, Cordero called the stewards’ stand after unsaddling and angrily denounced the officials for what he considered to a inconsistent decision.
He cited not only the incident in question but other occurrences in which he considered their judgment poor.
