Iranian President Hashemi Rafsanjani defended his decision to drop a leading hard-liner from his Interior Ministry post in a new Cabinet and asked Parliament to back his decision. Rafsanjani’s appeal to Parliament to fairly evaluate the technocrats he has nominated came at the beginning of a three-day debate by Iranian lawmakers on whether to approve the new 22-member Cabinet, state-run Tehran Radio reported. Radicals who have a slim majority in Parliament threatened earlier this month to veto the Cabinet unless Rafsanjani reinstates Interior Minister Ali Akbar Mohtashemi.
